Sustainable fisheries: artisanal fisheries port in Nouadhibou

Sustainable fisheries

With an annual harvest of over 90 million tonnes, global capture fisheries make a significant contribution to nutrition, in particular to the supply of animal protein. However, stocks of fish and other aquatic animals are under severe pressure, partly due to overfishing and environmental damage caused by fishing, and partly due to external influences such as pollution, climate change and other economic activities. Considerable efforts have been undertaken to improve the situation and some progress has been made in various regions of the world.

Nevertheless, the challenge remains: In oceans, lakes and rivers we need thoughtful management to safeguard these ecosystems. COFAD is committed to supporting initiatives that improve this situation, advocating for change on political, technical, and scientific fronts. Together, we can protect our living aquatic resources for future generations. Read more
