Regional development
Fisheries, aquaculture, and the blue economy are closely linked to the regions in which they are located:
- Their economic importance is often very high, especially in coastal or fish-farming areas. This is due not only to the fishing or aquaculture activities themselves, but also to their influence on other sectors such as tourism, where they serve as a major attraction.
- These sectors also possess a spatial dimension, since they require specific areas for their activities. Within these areas they can create both synergies and conflicts of use with other activities or purposes, including nature conservation.
- Furthermore, they interact closely with the ecology of their respective regions and depend on the well-being of the corresponding habitats. Consequently, this may require active habitat management, possibly involving restrictions or in some cases even the complete exclusion of human use.
- Finally, these sectors also have a social and cultural component. Fishing, aquaculture and other sectors of the blue economy may have long traditions in their regions and are often an important part of the local heritage.
Given this context, we at COFAD view the fisheries, aquaculture, and other branches of the blue economy through a regional lens, taking into account their impact on their respective regions. To support these sectors' evolution, we provide a suite of services tailored to the development of regions where fisheries, aquaculture, and the blue economy are vital. Our offerings are specifically designed for regional development within the context of these sectors, rather than as a generic service in unrelated areas. Intentional overlaps and connections with our other business areas are a fundamental part of our comprehensive approach to regional development within the context of fisheries, aquaculture, and the blue economy.
