East Africa aquaculture sector review

Project Background

Aquaculture in East Africa has been expanding and developing strongly since 2010 with the emergence of large cage farms and the intensification of pond aquaculture (tilapia and catfish). In this context, our group of companies "GOPA Consulting Group" sought insights into the further potential and possibilities of developing the aquaculture sector.

Objectives

To determine the status of aquaculture in East Africa, several fact-finding missions were conducted between 2017 and 2018 to assess the potential of aquaculture in the region and establish linkages between the private sector and donors. The sector review in Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Uganda and Zambia allowed the group to understand the sector and prepare for future large-scale projects under international technical and financial cooperation.

This assignment was internally financed by COFAD / GOPA.
