Germany: Strategy for integrated local development of the Fishing Port Bremerhaven (EMFAF)

Project Background

The European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund EMFAF (2021-2027) provides funding under its priority axis 3 - enabling a sustainable blue economy in coastal, island and inland areas, and fostering the development of fishing and aquaculture communities. The local action group of a fisheries area needs to develop a strategy and have it approved by the local authorities. The strategy sets the priorities for the ongoing funding period and delineates the decision process for projects earmarked for the fisheries area.

Objective

COFAD provided assistance to the Fishing Port Bremerhaven (Germany) in the formulation of a development strategy. It described the initial situation in the fisheries area, gathered and prioritised aims for future development and defined a mission statement.

Results

The formulation process took place in close communication with the local stakeholders and the client. Several meetings and workshops with the client and local stakeholders were held for gathering background information and intended aims and to catalyze the development of a priority structure for the fields of action. A validation process followed and produced the final strategy.
