Mauritania: Promotion of sustainable management of fisheries resources: Advisory assistance to IMROP for setting up the operational and scientific centre (COS)

Project background

Mauritania has significant fishery resources and is a major player in the West African fishing industry. The Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy employs a resource management system based on total allowable catch. The Mauritanian Institute of Oceanographic Research and Fisheries (IMROP) is responsible for providing scientific advice and recommendations that serve as a basis for the ministry's decisions on the management of fishery resources.

The KfW-funded five-years project will support the establishment of a so-called Centre Opérationnel et Scientifique (COS) located in Nouadhibou which will be shared by the National Coast Guard and IMROP.
